The Treasure Chest Theory - Part 1/2
Collage: Justine Anweiler, Treasure Chest of Self Worth, 2024.
I have a theory that we are all walking around with a treasure chest.
Stick with me on this one…
I had a lengthy discussion with a new friend where I learned lots about her life. Her achievements, her boredoms, her reasoning for pivots, and her big moves. And something that struck me as oddly unique about her was her ability to know when it was time to pivot.
She referred to the moment of change as “the hand of fate”. That when something had grown to be no longer aligned, she changed direction. And I was in awe.
So I tried to make sense of this flow. This knock-on effect. This ability to manifest a new door at the exact moment an old door was closing.
I landed on this metaphor of a treasure chest.
What if everyone is walking around with their very own, bespoke treasure chest full of tokens and gems that represented them? Their upbringing, their skills, their lived experiences, their careers — everything that shaped them.
And what if we are navigating the world holding these chests to show others what we have collected? Who we are.
In my new friend’s case, she was (and is) aware of how highly valuable her treasure is.
She knew when to open it when to stand in its worth, when to close it, and when to move on.
Those times in our lives, when we close our treasure chest, take space, re-evaluate the contents of our container, and cultivate protection of ourselves – are moments of growth. Acceptance. Gratitude. True abundance.
They are our seasons of hibernation, healing, recovery, and time in between. Those moments between jobs or relationships where we take our gems out, appreciate their uniqueness, polish their surfaces, and vow to always honor how precious they are.
I call the times when we take our chests, venture out into the world, and possibly add something new to them: pirating.
Pirating can be:
🏴☠️ ~ Going back to school
🏴☠️ ~ Living in a foreign country
🏴☠️ ~ Going on a pilgrimage
🏴☠️ ~ Taking a course in a new area of interest
Pirating is flex and a choice to add or swap something in our treasure chests. And this should always be our choice.
When did you last pirate and what did you acquire? 💎

1. How can I become more aware of the valuable treasures in my own chest?
To become more aware of the treasures in your chest, take time to reflect on your life experiences, achievements, skills, and personal qualities. Journaling about significant moments, talking to trusted friends or mentors, and considering feedback you've received from others can help you identify and appreciate the unique value you bring to the world. This self-awareness will empower you to make confident decisions and recognize opportunities that align with your strengths and passions.
2. What are some signs that indicate it's time to pivot and open a new door?
Signs that it's time to pivot might include feeling unfulfilled, bored, or disconnected from your current path. Other indicators could be a persistent desire for change, noticing a lack of growth or challenges, or encountering new opportunities that excite and inspire you. Trusting your intuition and being attuned to your own feelings and desires can guide you in recognizing when it's time to close one chapter and embark on a new adventure.
3. How can I effectively balance periods of 'pirating' with times of hibernation and self-reflection?
Balancing 'pirating' with hibernation involves listening to your inner needs and recognizing when you need rest and reflection versus when you're ready to explore and expand. Create a routine that allows for regular check-ins with yourself, setting aside time for introspection and self-care. When you feel rejuvenated and inspired, embrace opportunities for learning and growth. By honoring both your need for adventure and your need for rest, you can maintain a healthy and fulfilling balance in your life.
